Story Exchange

Wednesday, June 5, 2024
1:00 PM - 2:00 PM (EDT)
This webinar will be held via Zoom.
Category: Webinar

Through the Narrative 4 Story Exchange, participants have an opportunity to share a story with a partner, then hear their story shared back to the larger group from their partner. We will be using breakout rooms to split up into smaller groups. Story Exchanges can create more positive environments and compassionate leaders. Participants are given prompts and are in charge of their own story - they can be lighthearted or deep. It's a personal experience that has a community-wide impact.

Participants are encouraged to watch this short video prior to the session: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKA3vMQayvY.

This session will be facilitated by Dawn Martin of the Hinton Rural Life Center. Dawn facilitated the Rural Poverty Simulation at ReFrame Conference 2023 and is the Director of Program Ministries at Hinton Rural Life Center, a Coalition member.

Prompts: Remember, your story can be anchored in joy, pain, humor, embarrassment… there is no right story. As long as you speak from the heart, you will be successful!
We each have a story to share.

  • Tell a story of when you were aware of being different than those around you, or when you were particularly aware of someone else’s difference.
  • Tell a story about a time in which you felt misunderstood or felt like your community was misunderstood.
  • Reflect on a time when you needed help (and how it changed you).
  • Sometimes we are caught between colliding cultures – national, regional, ethnic, religious, socioeconomic, etc. Such collisions can call our sense of identity into question. Think of a story from your life in which you responded to such a cultural collision and what you gained from the experience.
  • “Whatever my situation is, I want to show that I’m not perfect, and perfect isn’t real. The youth need to know that, especially” –Keke Palmer. Tell a story about a time you realized that you were not perfect but learned something valuable about yourself or others.
  • Think of an essential story from your life that exemplifies / shows who you believe you are.
  • Tell a story about a funny experience that you are likely never to forget.
