Stanley Black & Decker announced the recipients of its first “Empower Makers” Global Impact Challenge. The Coalition for Home Repair is honored to have been named as a Makers Grant Recipient for our efforts to fill the skills gap in local communities by leveraging resources at a national level for collective impact. Coalition member Appalachia Service Project is also a Makers Grant Recipient. Watch newsclip here.

Initiated in 2021, the Global Impact Challenge grant program will award up to $25 million in grant funding over the next five years to nonprofits that are supporting trade workforce development initiatives in the construction and manufacturing sectors. With the first applications submitted in October 2021, 240 entrants were evaluated based on number of people served, outcomes projected, sustainable impact, depth of programs, and diversity, among many other considerations. The Coalition for Home Repair was selected as one of 86 organizations that will help skill and reskill roughly 180,000 makers throughout 2022.

"We are so grateful for this grant from Stanley Black & Decker,” said Becca Davis, Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Coalition for Home Repair. "It will allow us to expand our educational programming and better support nonprofits. Together, we can repair more homes for low-income households and inspire more people to become Makers."

The “ReFraming the Future” education program will support construction skills training for approximately 42,000 Makers in at least 38 states in 2022. Coalition for Home Repair Members and volunteers will repair 5,800 homes for low-income households in 2022. The program equips nonprofit employees with training and transferable skills to help their organizations provide high-quality home repairs to more low-income homeowners. Participants will receive training such as Lead Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) and Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) certification. The funding is also supporting the Coalition's upcoming Spring Scrums. Thanks to this grant, the Coalition is able to offer the series for free to members!

“Stanley Black & Decker is immensely proud to support the Coalition for Home Repair as they work to skill and reskill the next generation of trade professionals,” said Stanley Black & Decker Vice President of Social Impact, Diane Cantello. “Currently in the U.S., there are an estimated 650,000 open construction jobs and 10 million unfilled manufacturing jobs globally. Our purpose is to support ‘Those Who Make the World,’ and being able to fund educational programs and non-profits that are revitalizing trade careers directly connects to our core mission. Thanks to this year’s Makers Grant Recipients, together we will be one step closer to closing the trade skills gap.”
