Service Over Self (SOS) Overview:

Construction Director Overview:
We seek a service-oriented, mission-minded Construction Director to lead and direct all aspects of construction across all of SOS’s programs and to manage, sustain, and maintain all of SOS’s physical property. This position is full-time with a competitive salary. Standard office hours are 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, with some variance for program support and seasonal demands. Some travel may be required. This position is full-time, exempt, and reports to the Executive Director.
This position has direct reports. The starting salary for this position is $60,000. SOS offers a competitive benefits package.

● Possess excellent organizational and time management skills and be able to manage multiple projects
with competing deadlines at once. While not required, project management experience and/or
certification are helpful.

● Possess excellent oral and written communication skills; Experience and comfort with public speaking is a plus, but not required.
● Have at least 2-3 years of experience in residential construction (including at least a familiarity with
roofing, basic carpentry, and managing subcontractors) or be able to demonstrate competency in
residential construction.
Currently possess or be able to pass the necessary tests (within the first year of employment) to obtain
licensure as a General Contractor.
● Be proficient in the Google ecosystem (Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, etc.); familiarity with
Basecamp or equivalent project management software and Salesforce is a plus, but not required.
● Be able to navigate diverse relationships comfortably and understand the nuanced dynamics of working
with people from various backgrounds, including low-income populations, affluent populations, youth,
and adults.

Responsibilities
● Give overall leadership and direction to SOS’s volunteer-led critical home repair program* including:
    o Evaluating, selecting, and communicating with home repair applicants.
    o Planning, preparing, and executing critical home repairs for 25-30 homeowners each year SOS    Construction Director Job Description through our critical home repair program.
    o Planning, monitoring, and managing the construction and facilities budget (both operational (~$350k) and capital (~$400k)).
    o Managing approximately $5m in physical assets.
    o Managing grant funds and reporting requirements for construction-related grants.
    o Managing the SOS shop to ensure there are adequate tools and materials for all projects.
    o Managing relationships with a wide variety of vendors.
    o Ensuring that SOS is aligned with industry and OSHA safety standards.
    o Ensuring all workers and volunteers are safe and trained adequately for the work.
    o Ensuring all work is completed on time, to code, passes necessary inspection, and is marked by
excellence.
● Lead and manage a full-time and part-time staff of employees dedicated to the construction and
facilities department. This may include, but is not limited to, Assistant Construction Directors, Program
Managers, Project Managers, and Construction and Facilities Assistants. This aspect of the role
consists of coaching, mentoring, leading one-on-ones, staff development, etc.
● Lead and manage a seasonal staff of 3-4 construction managers during the camp season.
● Manage and maintain all SOS properties, including, but not limited to, the primary SOS facility, intern
houses, jobsite equipment and tools, and the vehicle fleet.
● As needed, assist with weekly programming for SOS Builds cohorts (after-school job training program),
typically 1-2 days/week.
● As needed, assist with recruiting (some travel may be required).
● As needed, assist with SOS special projects and events (e.g., recruiting events, fundraisers).
*Exact daily details of this role during the camp season (2nd Monday in February through last Friday in July) vary greatly.

SOS hosts volunteer home repair camps during the months of March (college students), June, and July (high school and middle school students). These camps are high-energy, short-term mission opportunities where volunteers repair 25-30 homes per year. Spring Camps are smaller and more intimate with college student volunteers (~30 campers per week). Summer camps are high intensity (~100 students/chaperones per week, plus up to ~25 college and high school summer staff), and the schedule is demanding: six-day weeks, early mornings, Sunday afternoons, and evenings during the week are normal. In addition to the home repair components of camp, our Construction Team members are all involved in many other aspects of making camp happen. This can be quite varied and might include things like helping clean up after meals, visiting worksites, talking with youth leaders, leading and managing college summer staff, leading meetings and gatherings of campers, dealing with problems that arise, etc. We seek to provide an excellent level of service to all of SOS’s partners. This includes college and teenage campers, youth/adult leaders, college staff, fellow SOS year-round staff, and low-income homeowners and their families.
